Stoneware 2019
2019 saw the move from my old studio, into my late fathers studio at Duff House, Arundel UK. Quite an emotional move, back to where he first taught me, a little boy of 5, to throw. This year also marked my 60th birthday and throwing my first 24 inch bowl. I have also decided to no longer preliminary pencil sketches on to the bisque pot but paint straight on with Daniel Rhodes soot black. No room for mistakes and so much fun. I got reprimanded in art lessons at school for using a pen, not pencil for all my sketching. I have kept all my sketchbooks I have filled over the years, and they are nearly all pen work. It's just so much more spontaneous.
Having experimented with countless glazes and colours over my career I find the simple monotone combination I use on these pieces has remained my favourite when painting on stoneware. The subtle Semi-matt Zinc glaze from an Emmanuel Cooper book is a perfect background with a lovely tendency to bring out a hint of blue from the Daniel Rhodes soot black pigment.
My thrown pieces vary in size from 4 inches up to 22 inches in diameter.
